The Gene Hart Memorial Golf Outing

Gene Hart History

Gene Hart 1931 -1999

"Ladies and gentlemen, the Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup!"

With these words, Gene Hart secured his place in Philadelphia sports history as he called the final game of the 1974 NHL Stanley Cup Finals as the Flyers prevailed over the Boston Bruins to win the championship.

For 28 years, Gene called the Flyers' most exciting moments, and in the process, helped cultivate generations of devoted fans.  In a city where professional hockey was virtually unknown prior to 1967, Gene brought the game to life for viewers and listeners through his dynamic calls and boundless enthusiasm.

Fondly dubbed "The Voice" of the Flyers, Gene's broadcasting highlights included six Stanley Cup final series, five NHL All-Star games, and two NHL-Soviet All-Star series.  His contributions to his beloved sport were recognized with this induction into the Flyers' Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997.

In addition to hockey, Gene's other lifelong passion was opera.  In 1998, he announced the Opera Company of Philadelphia's first ever live broadcast of a performance in which he introduced the cast, outlined the story and described the scenery for Vincenzo Bellini's Norma.

The Gene Hart Memorial Golf Outing has become a popular annual event benefiting the Temple University Hospital Cancer Center.
