The Temple Cancer Center HDR Brachytherapy Suite

Proceeds from the Gene Hart Memorial Golf Outing are being used to create a new suite for HDR Brachytherapy in the Temple Cancer Center.

What is HDR Brachytherapy?
HDR (High Dose Rate) Brachytherapy is an innovative form of internal radiation cancer therapy using a specialized machine that tightly focuses the radiation within the site of the tumor.  HDR therapy delivers the maximum amount of radiation to the tumor while allowing very little radiation to reach the healthy surrounding tissue. HDR therapy can be used for a variety of cancers.  The treatment is delivered in minutes and usually performed on an outpatient basis over a series of multiple visits.

Benefits of HDR Brachytherapy:
* Usually delivered on an outpatient basis
* Treatments are completed in days rather than weeks or months
* Increased accuracy of treatment delivery
* Can be used for many different cancer types and locations, including cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, esophagus, soft tissue tumors and skin lesions
* Does not cause irritation and reddening to the skin as is sometimes associated with external beam radiation treatments
* Reduces the amount of radiation exposure to the patient as well as to medical personnel

The combination of increased efficacy and increased patient comfort and convenience make HDR Brachytherapy an essential part of the Temple Cancer Center.  Your participation in this year's golf outing will purchase a High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy unit and renovate the space in which this new equipment will be used.   A new suite is being developed within the Cancer Center, creating a comfortable environment for our patients and their loved ones.  For more about the Temple University Hospital Radiation Oncology program, visit the Temple Cancer Center web site.
